Tax planning, meaning before the year ends

A lot of tax surprises come from nobody looking at the numbers until February. I check in mid-year and again in the fall to see where the year is landing, adjust your estimated payments, and talk through the decisions that change the bill: when to buy equipment, whether an S corporation election makes sense, how much to set aside for retirement.

How it works when I also keep your books

There is no year-end scramble. By January I've reconciled every month, asked every question, and organized what the return needs. You'll get a short list of documents to send (1099s you received, mortgage interest, that kind of thing), review the return with me, and sign electronically.

If you only need a return

I also prepare returns for small business owners who keep their own books. I'll need clean, reconciled books to work from. If they aren't, the first step is a cleanup, quoted separately.

How tax preparation is priced

A flat fee per return, quoted before I start, based on the forms and schedules involved. Planning is included for monthly bookkeeping clients and available as a separate engagement for tax-only clients.

Common questions

When should I get in touch about my taxes?

Before the year ends if you want planning to make a difference. For preparation, mid-February gives us time to file without an extension.

Do you file extensions?

Yes, when it's the right call. An extension gives you more time to file, not more time to pay, so we'll estimate what's owed and pay it by the April deadline.

What if I get a letter from the IRS or the NC Department of Revenue?

Send it to me before you respond. I'll read it, explain what it's asking for, and help you put together the response.

Get ahead of next April

If it's before year end, we can still change the number. If it's after, we can at least make sure the return is right and the next year starts cleaner.
