Bookkeeping

Monthly bookkeeping for small businesses in Lenoir, NC

Every transaction categorized, every account reconciled, and a set of financial statements each month that tells you whether the business made money. Done by the same person who will prepare your tax return.

The monthly rhythm

  • I categorize transactions
  • I reconcile the accounts
  • I send you financial statements by the middle of the following month

If any of this sounds familiar

  • You do the books yourself, late at night, and you're not sure they're right.

  • You have a bookkeeper, but the reports come late or don't make sense.

  • Your tax preparer asked for "the books" and you sent a bank statement.

  • You know what's in the bank, but you don't know what the business earned.

What's included every month

  • Transactions categorized in QuickBooks Online
  • Bank and credit card accounts reconciled to the statements
  • Profit and loss statement and balance sheet, with a short note from me on anything unusual
  • Questions about unclear transactions, asked in one monthly batch
  • A year-end package for your tax return, which I'll be preparing, so it's already in order

Also available

  • Invoicing and bill tracking (accounts receivable and payable)
  • Sales tax filing with the NC Department of Revenue
  • 1099 preparation in January
  • Payroll setup through a payroll provider, reconciled with the books each month

Books that are behind

Months behind, years behind, or kept in a way that doesn't add up: the first job is a cleanup. I'll review what exists, tell you what it will take to get current, and quote it as a one-time project. Once you're caught up, the monthly work begins.

How bookkeeping is priced

A flat monthly fee based on the number of accounts and the volume of transactions. I quote it after looking at your books, and it stays the same each month unless the business changes in a way that changes the work. I quote cleanup separately.

Why not just use an app?

Software categorizes transactions. It doesn't notice that a client paid you twice, that a subscription you cancelled is still billing, or that your office supplies line has a laptop in it that should be handled differently for taxes. I look at the books the way someone who has to sign the return would, because I'm the one signing it.

Common questions

How often will I hear from you?

Once a month with your statements, plus a note whenever I have a question about a transaction.

Can I keep my current software?

Usually. If it can reconcile accounts and produce a balance sheet, we can work with it. If it can't, I'll recommend a move and handle it.

What if I only need help once a year?

If you keep your own books and want them checked before your return, that's a one-time review project. Ask me about it.

Let's look at your books

Send a note about the business and how the books are handled now. I'll tell you what it would take to get them right and keep them that way.
